How Google ranks local businesses
Google never publishes the full recipe, but the ingredients for local search are well understood. Here is what matters for owner run service businesses.
Two places you can show up
Short answer: Google Maps / local pack (top three with map) and regular blue link results below. Both matter; Maps often wins the first call on mobile.
The same search can trigger different layouts. “Emergency plumber Warrington” might show Maps first. A longer research query might show more website links.
Your job is to be strong on both: profile for Maps, structured service pages for web results.
Relevance: does Google think you do this?
Short answer: Primary category, services listed, page titles, and on page copy must match the search. Vague sites lose to specific ones.
If you are a window fitter but your homepage only says “quality installations”, Google has little to match against “replacement windows Warrington”.
Service pages, area pages where they make sense, and a profile that lists real services all increase relevance without keyword stuffing.
Prominence: do you look established?
Short answer: Reviews, photos, citations, and consistent business details across the web signal that you are a real, active business.
Prominence is not bought reviews or fake listings. It is steady genuine reviews, photos of completed work, and the same name/address/phone everywhere important directories look.
Distance and service area
Short answer: Google weighs proximity for many queries. Service area businesses must set areas honestly in the profile and mention them clearly on site.
You cannot rank in every town from a generic page swap. Focus on areas you genuinely serve with unique, useful content where it adds value.

Website signals Google still reads
Short answer: Mobile speed, clear contact info, internal links, helpful content, and accurate structured data. Spammy shortcuts backfire.
Google’s public guidance emphasises helpful, people first content and technical basics. That aligns with what works for local enquiries in practice.
AI search tools read many of the same signals differently. That is why AI visibility is part of the Digistruct package. See AI search guide.
Quick answers.
Can anyone guarantee map pack position 1?
No. Competitors, searcher location, and Google’s algorithms change. Ethical SEO improves your signals and reports progress; it does not sell guaranteed slots.
Why am I on page one for my business name but not for “near me” searches?
Branded searches are easy once Google knows you exist. Generic service + location searches compete with every similar business in the area. That needs profile + site + reviews work.
Does social media help Google rankings?
Social profiles can appear in search and support trust, but they do not replace local SEO fundamentals. Posting alone rarely fixes Maps visibility.
