Nearly half of consumers have used AI to find a local business. Google rankings alone do not get you recommended in ChatGPT.
Will ChatGPT recommend my business?
Short answer: Only if models can verify what you do, where you work, and that you are credible, using structured site data, consistent listings, and third-party mentions.
Ask ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity the same question your customers ask. If you are not named, you are in the majority.
Fix the basics first: accurate schema on the site, matching GBP and Bing/Apple listings, service pages that answer real questions in plain English, and reviews outside Google’s walled garden where possible.
GEO vs local SEO: do I need both?
Short answer: Yes. Local SEO targets Google Search and Maps. GEO (generative engine optimisation) targets AI answers. Roughly half overlap; neither replaces the other.

Google reviews vs AI visibility
Short answer: Strong Google reviews help Maps; many AI tools cannot read them. Reviews on other reputable platforms and clear on-site proof matter for AI mentions.
That does not mean ignore Google reviews. It means do not assume a five-star profile alone future-proofs you for AI search.
