How to verify your Google Business Profile
You set the profile up last week and nothing shows on Maps yet. Usually that means verification is still pending, or Google needs a different method.
Profile + pin + call button
This is what customers tap in the map pack: your listing on Maps, linked to your Google Business Profile. Name, address, and phone should match your website footer and contact page, not an old mobile or a different trading name.
- Name Digistruct Consulting Warrington - Online Growth Partner
- Address Unit HL1, Evans House, Norman St, Warrington WA2 7HW
- Phone 07721 771273
Digistruct’s listing is the example; your audit checks the same fields on your business.
Why Google makes you verify
Short answer: Verification proves you control the business. Until it passes, the profile does not fully appear in Maps or local search.
Anyone can type a business name into Google. Verification stops fake listings and spam. It is annoying when you are legitimate, but there is no way around it for a real profile.
If you just created the listing, “pending verification” is normal for a few days. If it has been weeks, something is stuck and needs fixing.
Verification methods Google uses
Short answer: Postcard to your business address, email to your domain, phone call or SMS, or video walkthrough of premises and tools. Google picks what is offered for your listing type.
Postcard: Google posts a code to the address on the profile. It can take 5 to 14 days. Enter the code in the profile dashboard. Do not change the address while you wait or the code may invalid.
Email: Sometimes offered if you have a website on a matching domain (e.g. you@yourbusiness.co.uk and yourbusiness.co.uk). Check spam folders.
Phone / SMS: Instant code if Google trusts the number matches other records. Use the same number as on your website footer.
Video: Common for service-area businesses and some trades. Google asks you to show signage, van, tools, or paperwork. Follow their checklist exactly; do not skip steps.
Profile stuck on “pending verification”
Short answer: Check spam for the postcard, confirm the address is real and staffed, match phone and website to the profile, and do not create a duplicate listing while you wait.
The common mistakes: wrong address format, using a home address when Google expects a storefront, changing details mid-verification, or opening a second profile because the first “did not work”.
Search your exact business name plus town. If two listings appear, you may have a duplicate. Merging or removing duplicates comes before starting again. See the main Google Business Profile guide.
After you are verified
Short answer: Complete categories, services, photos, and hours immediately. Verification is step one; an empty verified profile still loses to competitors.
Align your website name, address, and phone with the profile the same week you verify. Mismatch is one of the fastest ways to lose map-pack visibility after you finally go live.
If you are service-area only (you visit customers), set your service area honestly and mirror it on the site. See not in the map pack once you are live.
Quick answers.
How long does Google Business Profile verification take?
Email or phone can be minutes. Postcards often take 5 to 14 working days. Video review can take a few days once submitted. There is no legitimate way to skip the queue.
I never got the postcard. What now?
In the profile dashboard, request a new postcard after 14 days. Confirm the address is deliverable (unit numbers, postcode). If you moved mid-process, fix the address before requesting again.
Can someone verify my profile for me?
Only someone with access to the business (post, email, phone, or premises for video). An agency can guide you, but Google will not verify a listing without proof tied to the business.
